Discipline Plan
- Students in first grade are expected to have appropriate classroom behavior. In our classroom, we will have five basic rules to ensure a safe learning environment.
Classroom Rules
1. Listen and follow the teacher's directions the first time.
2. Keep your hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
3. Raise your hand to speak.
4. Stay in your assigned area.
5. Be respectful and use kind words.
- To help children keep track of their behavior, we will use a clip chart.
- Each child will have a clip with his/her name on it.
- At the beginning of each day, everyone starts on green. Your child will have a clip that they will physically move up or down on the chart, depending on their choices.
Pink- Outstanding - If you move to Outstanding, you’ll get to go to the treasure box!
Purple- Great Choice - As you continue to make good choices, you’ll advance to Great Choice!
Blue- Good Choice - Making a good choice will help you move up to the blue section of our chart.
Green- Ready to Learn - You will get to start out each day on Ready to Learn. You will move your clip up or down depending on your choices each day.
Yellow- Slow Down - If you receive a warning, you will move your clip down to help you remember to think about your choices. You will need to walk 5 laps at recess.
Red- Think About It - If you continue to make poor choices, you will move to Think About It. You will need to walk 8 laps at recess.
Orange- Parent Contact - If you still choose to make bad decisions, you will move to Parent Contact.
Rewards/Incentives
* Compliments and Praise
- Good notes home
- Stickers/Awards
- Special Treats
- Treasure Box
- Extra computer time
Please check your child's agenda daily to monitor his/her behavior. A colored dot or stamp will be marked in the agenda to indicate your child's behavior.
Homework
- Homework Calenders go home on the first day of the month and are due on the last day.
- Please record in your child's binder the book/books your child reads nightly. Your child should read 15-20 minutes each night. I would really like for your child to read during this reading time, rather than you reading to him/her.
- Spelling words can be found in the top right corner of the homework calendar. The number of words will be modified based on your child's needs.
- Spelling tests are given the last day of the week.
- Homework should take about 20 minutes each night. If it takes your child longer to finish, please let me know. I will adjust homework as necessary.
- Several times a year, I will assign a home project. This will be in addition to the normal weekly homework calendar. These projects are usually sent home in the Homework folder. Usually a couple weeks will be given to complete the assignment.
School Hours
- The school day begins at 8:45 AM and ends at 3:40 PM.
- Students may arrive at school between 8:15 AM - 8:45 AM.
- If students arrive at school after 8:45 AM, they will be marked tardy.
Early Dismissal
- If you plan to pick your child up early, please notify me ahead of time. This way I can prepare your child with the necessary work he/she will miss.
- The last early dismissal is 3:00 PM.
- If you pick up your child before 11:30 AM, it is considered an absence.
- Please go straight to the office when picking up your child. They will notify me personally. Do not interrupt class by coming to the classroom.
Alternate Transportation
- I will dismiss your child as indicated on the transportation forms unless you have informed me otherwise.
- On the day your child will be going home an alternative way, please notify me via e-mail, phone call, or note. Just telling your child will not suffice. If there is a change, I am required to receive written notice. It is for your own child's safety.
Tardies/Absences
- Students are considered tardy if they arrive at school after the 8:45 AM bell.
- Students arriving after 8:45 AM should check in at the office for a tardy slip before coming to class.
- Students who are absent are required to bring a note from the parent or guardian (you may also send me an e-mail).
- If a note is not received, your child will receive an unexcused absence.
- Sickness, family emergencies, and religious holidays are considered excused absences.
- If you know that your child will be absent, please make me aware of this ahead of time. Then I can prepare your child with the necessary assignments and materials that will be missed. This will help keep your child connected with the pace of the class.
- In cases of extended absence, please arrange to come pick up daily assignments.
Morning Duties
Each morning your child will have morning duties.
- Unpack his/her book bag.
- Turn in his/her agenda.
- Use the restroom.
- Sharpen pencils
- Get started on the morning assignment that is written on the board.

Physical Activity (Recess)
- We will have 30 minutes of Physical Activity each day.
- Remember, tennis shoes are always the safest way to play. Flip-flops should not be worn to school!
Conferences
- If you have a need for a conference, please notify me via e-mail so we can arrange an appropriate conference time. Stopping in before, after, or throughout the day is not appropriate to discuss needs. I will respond promptly to your concerns and would appreciate you respecting the other children and our time by doing the same. Conferences may be documented and/or an additional person may sit in on the conference as deemed necessary.
- It is not appropriate to stop by the classroom in the morning to discuss matters when sending your child to school. We can arrange a phone conference or set up an alternative time for a conference at school.
Notes/Notification Home
- When notes or notifications are sent home with a due date, please be courteous by responding accordingly and promptly.
- If a discipline note is sent home, it is to be reviewed with the child, signed by the parent or guardian and returned back to school so I know it was addressed.
- If a notification is sent home regarding your child's lunch account, please add money to his/her account by the next school day.
- If a notification is sent home for a library book, please return the book promptly or if lost send the appropriate funds to replace it.
- If a notification is sent home regarding needed materials please try to replace them quickly. Your child will be borrowing from a peer or from me until new supplies are sent in.
Thursday Folders
- Your child will bring this folder home on Thursday of the school week.
- Please look through all papers in the Thursday Folder. I often write notes on your child's work so you can better support the curriculum at home.
- Please send the folder back on Friday.
Checking Out Books
- Your child is allowed to check out books from both the media center and our classroom library.
- He/she is responsible for taking care of all checked-out books and returning them on time.
- If any books are lost or damaged, your child will have to pay a replacement fee.
Textbooks
- In first grade, your child will begin to use textbooks for math and reading.
